In October 2023, the UK Government announced new recycling legislation called Simpler Recycling to reform the waste system in terms of collections and accepted materials for recycling. These changes aim to simplify what can be recycled and provide consistency in collections for domestic and commercial sites across England.
The legislation requires businesses to adhere to stricter recycling practices to simplify recycling nationwide and is a requirement from 31st March 2025.
The legislation applies to businesses, schools, hospitals and non-domestic sites and requires you to separate dry recycling from the general waste - paper, cardboard, cartons, metals, plastics and glass.
There has historically been a large amount of variation across the country on what can be recycled and how often. The Government is keen to ensure that all areas of England have access to recycling services and that they use them. Recycling is better for the environment than landfill or incineration - in terms of resource management, carbon outputs and processing of virgin materials.
You need to ensure you are compliant with the new rules - are you separating correctly and recycling your materials? Do you have the correct bins at your site?
